PUBLICATIONS

Hell’s Kitchen A web-based magazine in french with edgy thematic covers, images and lengthy articles. They put them out on a more sporadic level. Besides covering the usual scene of fashion and arts, they also give you free mixtapes right on their website.

Honeyee This is a web-based magazine that covers Japanese fashion, music and art culture. The only downside? It’s all in Japanese. However, the site has a decent balance of visuals and you can still get put on to different designs and designers that have not yet garnered enough attention here in the states.

DOTCOMS

Tokyo Fashion I came across this site while doing some fashion research and was knew instantly it needed to be added to this month’s THE LIST. Japan is always sooo fashion forward and avantgarde with just about everything, even if it is not fashion-related. This is a good site to just see what the latest trends, influences, and fledgling designers.

Hope you learned about a new label and will go support these various designers, publications and sites.

Till next time,

DOTCOMS & PUBLICATIONS

Possession Sessions An arts website run by an artist named Karen Miranda Augustine. She has her own personal website here. However the sessions site is relatively new, has tons of interviews and great posts on new artists in and around the world so make sure you go check out the website.

The Grio An African-American news and culture website. They have extensive interviews, editorials and social commentary pieces. Definitely a great place to stay up on current news covering a range of topics, learn about someone new and see how you can be involved within the African-American community.

Bon Magazine A Swedish indie fashion magazine that is heavy on the visuals and content. The images are always very high fashion and complex. The mag does cover more of the international fashion scene but at the heart covers the Swedish fashion scene…which let’s be real…cannot be all that terrible…in fact it’s prolly really fresh and fashion-forward (it is the land of H&M, Ikea, and Cheap Mondays). Check out the site and if you get a chance make sure you cop a paper copy of it too!

PUBLICATIONS & DOTCOMS:

Complex – What’s not to love about this magazine/website. Great covers. Edgy, fashionable and innovative. Started by designer Mark Ecko; this site is really great and I am glad its one of the few mag sites that survived last year. Heavy emphasis on Music and Fashion. Definitely on the urban-side but they’ll surprise you from time to time. Check out the site and go buy a copy of the magazine too!

NYLON - I was introduced to this magazine by few friends of mine last year. I really like their angle. Its all fashion but with a slightly indie feel. It’s not like Vogue where it’d be all about haute couture and high fashion, but this mag/site is more about up&coming designers and labels that are fresh and purchasable for us regular folks.

Current – This is actually a TV network but they also have a good website. I am obsessed with this channel. A really great friend of mine told me about it awhile ago but it was not until recently that I finally took a minute to check it out. So finally last week I did and I have been watching hours of it every day/night….all week. There are soooo many different shows and news stories. From following Mos Def in Japan, to the Viewer Content (VC) short films where freelancers from all over the world create, produce/direct and submit their own newstories, to clips on social/foreign issues. A media outlet for the liberal-minded that a even a conservative could learn to love. If you are an aspiring writer, journalist, director/producer, and even actor/comedian, and social media genius, this is a site and network you should definitely check out!

I hope you liked the designers/labels listed above. If you are a designer yourself, please email at editor.shademagazine@gmail.com and tell me about your work! Also lookout for a special DMV fashion piece next month!

Stay tuned folks, tons more to come!

PUBLICATIONS

WWD- I know I said Vogue is the fashion bible. But let me clarify, Vogue is great and always will be…but its like the old testament and WWD is the New Testament. This magazine seems to be carrying on torch…whether Vogue likes it or not. WWD is always thorough.

W – I love how big this magazine is. Sure its not the easiest to carry around but the photography (esp the covers!) are amazing. Great fashion too! Its definitely more European than most other mags we are use to, but thats what makes it so worthwhile.

Frank151- The complete opposite of W. These miniature magazine-books are always based off of a specific theme that is carried out in all aspects of the issue. Great friend of mine introduced me to this mag and its definitely grown on me over time. I was resistant to the size and thickness of the paper. But its effective and I do like that you can carry them everywhere. And they have interviews, anecdotes, fashion and music.

DOTCOMS

Bread & Butter-Website dedicated to urban fashion. Pretty thorough.

Vice Magazine-A friend of mine put me onto this site almost 3 years ago. I am grateful for that to this day. Raw and real articles. Great images. And I LOVE their dos & don’t section. Just hope ya never turn up in it though. yikes

Format Mag – Another friend of mine told me about this great site last year. Beautiful images, layout and graphics. Music, Fashion and Art online magazine.

This is THE LIST for this month. If you are a designer/label in the area(dc/md/va) or from elsewhere in the world, please contact me editor.shademagazine.com to be considered.  Every month you’ll get a new set of labels, designers, sites, publications and so forth added to THE LIST. Hope you enjoyed this set, please leave comments and tell me what you think!!

2010 Spring Paris Fashion Week

I have dreamt of going to fashion week…new york, paris and london…for-ever. However, as of now, I am still an under-the-radar…well under…renaissance woman. So until that glorious day comes where I will glide to my front row seats to any and every show my heart pleases to attend…I will write about it.

Overall general trend has been browns, whites, blacks, and sprinkle of color here and there. Light orange and blue was pretty common all across the board. Decent number of pant suits as well. Not the long skinny-leg kind, but your basic trousers right at ankle or mid-calf. Generally dresses were either super long or right above the knee.

So here’s my picks from 2010 Spring Paris Fashion Week:

mcq

Alexander McQueen- This man is fantastical. I wonder what his dreams are like. What he sends down the runway are just extraordinary works of art. This time I was hooked just on the shoes!

Junya Watanabe-I looove the 30′s style men’s shoes. No real dresses. Lots of pant-suits.Very masculine-chic. Beautiful tall tightly wound-wraps.

Lanvin- Alber Elbaz can do no wrong in my eyes. The shoes, the dresses, everything. And if you know me well, then you know, I love a good dress.

Giambattista Valli - If I was to go on a safari, I’d rock this. I mean that in a good way.I like the straw material. Perfectly-cut at mid-thigh to above the knee. Just how I like my skirts.

Jean Paul Gautier very colorful which definitely is not surprising since he always does his own thing. Corsetted tops making perfectly cinched waists.Heavy on the stockings and chunky bracelets and long cuts.

Balmain- Rocker-look. Had various looks not just dresses or just pant-suits like most of the other collections. A lot of individual pieces. Same color scheme though.Heavy on the details and hand-work.

Introducing: The List

THE LIST

linksalamode

I love fashion. Sounds like such a common statement. But it’s true. Fashion is definitely top 3 of worldly things that I truly love and actually get moved by. I actually get chills when I see an impeccably made dress or a stunning pair of heels. As a child I would alter my clothes, cutting up my shirts and bottoms, playing dress-up with my mother & sister’s clothes and shoes (until I couldn’t fit in them anymore!), and studying and obsessing over magazines. I was in there, back when the likes of Issac Mizarhi, Versace, Valentino, Carolina Herrera and Calvin Klein ruled the fashion world…and still do!  watch this

So I have always tried to keep up with different trends and realized…well…after a while it got to be really difficult to keep up. Trends, colors and materials are easy to keep up with, but these days names are coming in and out and the fashion industry has grown to mean more than just a dress and pair of pumps.

So I realized one thing I wish I had, was an extensive catalogue. A list that had names of labels that I had never heard of. And wished I had. So I decided I need to make that list. or at least start one. And add onto it as time went by. The comprehensive list I have been working on consists of labels, sites and magazines that I love and find fresh and I feel that you need to check out too.

Along the way, I studied different magazines, sites and shows and real-life people(I love seeing what people wear and how they create their looks!) and began jotting them down.

Over the course of next few months I will be building up to my extensive list. So to start off, here are the first batch:

Labels

Elle – youthful and always covers hippest newest “it” people.

Time – stay up on the politics. interesting articles. signature covers.

Huffington Post- socio-politcal blogger’s heaven.

Reuters - stay up on world affairs…and anything else under sun. good writing & images.

Artsy:

Juxtapoz -the images alone gets you hooked. articles pretty good too.

W’AD – wow. just wow. this European urban fashion/lifestyle magazine is more like a book. crazy covers and images.

JPG -photographers heaven. and you can learn few things if you are starting out.

Stay Tuned! The List will be updated every month. It will contain not only under-the-radar designers but also established fashion houses, various publications/sites and a few trend alerts.

Also, If you know of a label/line that should be included let me know!
