SIGHT: Catwalk Afros

Sonia Rykiel’s 40th Anniversary at Paris Fashion Week

Another slew of fashion week shows are going on in the world. This time in Paris and its for the Fall/Winter 2011 line….I know you are probably thinking hows it for 2011 when we just started 2010. Well that’s just how ahead fashion world plans and creates. Anyhow, the technicalities of all this can be addressed in another post on its own.

I came across this info while looking at YSL’s show photos (which were pretty interesting to say the least) but what drew me about Sonia’s show was the mention of catwalk afros. And on top of that it was noted that,

30 famous fashion designers including Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Lacroix and Castelbajac, along with Martin Margiela, Yohji Yamamoto, Karl Lagerfeld, Vivienne Westwood, Valentino, Rodarte, Stella McCartney, Diane Von Furstenberg, Narciso Rodriguez and Michael Kor, offered their interpretations of Rykiel’s couture as a way of paying tribute to the iconic designer.

I know reading all this and seeing the images made me wish I was at the show.  Also it surprised me to see how supportive other designers are of one another and their endeavors  especially when I always imagined it being more cut throat….I think watching Devil Wears Prada one too many times was what may have gotten that idea inserted into my brain. Any who, take a look at these pictures and the video below of the show.

More Paris Fashion Week posts to come this week…stay tuned!

DOTCOMS & PUBLICATIONS

Possession Sessions An arts website run by an artist named Karen Miranda Augustine. She has her own personal website here. However the sessions site is relatively new, has tons of interviews and great posts on new artists in and around the world so make sure you go check out the website.

The Grio An African-American news and culture website. They have extensive interviews, editorials and social commentary pieces. Definitely a great place to stay up on current news covering a range of topics, learn about someone new and see how you can be involved within the African-American community.

Bon Magazine A Swedish indie fashion magazine that is heavy on the visuals and content. The images are always very high fashion and complex. The mag does cover more of the international fashion scene but at the heart covers the Swedish fashion scene…which let’s be real…cannot be all that terrible…in fact it’s prolly really fresh and fashion-forward (it is the land of H&M, Ikea, and Cheap Mondays). Check out the site and if you get a chance make sure you cop a paper copy of it too!

Hope you loved this month’s edition of THE LIST. Leave a comment below and let me know what you think!

ARIIEL

ARIIEL

What started out as just a joke has turned into a growing entrepreneurial dream turned enterprise. The designer had a dream, the gift of drawing and the tenacity and will to manifest her ideas. She started off by designing high-end pieces and over time began to branch out and test her skills by actually making the jewelry herself. This resulted in the creation of a second line, in spring 2009, of custom-made jewelry pieces called ARIIEL. You may ask yourself, so what does “Ariiel” mean? It means, Light or Lion of God. The designer  says she selected this name, “merely for the projects’ inconceivable intention that may position it and others ahead, by becoming the guiding light!”

After a small sit-down with the designer, I asked her few questions about ARIIEL’s story, her inspiration and where her love for jewelry came from. Here’s what she said:

What sparked your initial desire to make art with metals and semi-precious gems?

Growing up, art was my favorite subject and still is to date; I remember cutting flowers and holding them in-between my fingers or against my earlobes and treating them like my jewelries or drawing, painting and creating things whether it was to create a piano out of cardboard box or sitting in a garden and painting a portrait of the scenery; I did it all!!  These were the hours that I retreated from reality and simultaneously these were the days that I began to cultivate and strengthen my GOD given talent and began to weave it with my favorite fashion accessory, Jewelry!!

How do your designs begin?

For ARIIEL: I shape them! And everything is based on my instinct.  It’s important that each piece has its own identity and not meet the status quo,  for the most part with respect to the classic signature-look of pearl necklaces.  Only in the case of pearl necklaces, I bend the rule because; it allows me to relate to some of my favorite actresses like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly who covered the front pages of countless magazines. Overall, my inspiration comes from a combination of things including nature, music and my surroundings together, gives birth to a vision and the jewelry evolves!

Which is more powerful in your work: materials effect imagination or vice versa?

I must say, the materials effect on my imagination have more power; just seeing it come to life itself brings joy to my heart and possesses power on its own not to mention, the jewelry’s color and degree of shimmer.

Who are the different types of women you envision wearing your pieces?

I would envision a woman, who is mysterious yet free spirited who embraces her own identity and style with a passion and confidence. To me, no one should be alike and everyone should have identity because each is special in her own ways!

What or who is your muse?

My imagination allows me to envision the piece before it’s made, and as such in my head is where the muse is located…because at times there have been items that I withdrew from a collection simply because, it didn’t stand out enough or whatever the reason might be in my mental picture.

What sets you apart?

ARIIEL’s identity/brand combined with my dream.

Lastly, is there something that feeds your creativity?

It would definitely be nature combined with my artistic visions which in turn  feed my creativity.

The following images below are just a few of the great pieces ARIIEL has to offer. At the bottom you will find the contact information you need should you want to inquire further!

_______________________________________________________________________________________

All the pieces within this line are pretty affordable and are definitely unique in design and finish. Each jewelry is a perfect complementary piece for any look of the day or evening. For more information, contact: ariiel.jewels@gmail.com

PUBLICATIONS, SITES & PLACES

Wonderland Magazine- An edgy indie magazine and site created by a Londoner by name of Huw Gwyther. Mag covers fashion and film. Some great articles and images. Definitely a more edgier vibe than you’d find in say Vogue or Nylon. So take a look at their site, read some articles and let me know what you think!

Artschoolvets- Cool arts and culture website…only problem is its all in German. And they don’t have an english option though they really should. Features some really cool artists and I really got into it simply on the images and gives you insight into what young European readers and art enthusiasts may be into these days. Check it out!

DEKKA -Local fashion/art collective located right on U st in DC. A lot of great designers and artists showcase their work in that place and that is definitely one spot I’d recommend anyone to go to for some great purchases and to find out about some great indie designers/artists.

I hope you liked this segment of THE LIST. More to come next time around. Leave a comment and let me know what you think!

PUBLICATIONS & DOTCOMS:

Complex – What’s not to love about this magazine/website. Great covers. Edgy, fashionable and innovative. Started by designer Mark Ecko; this site is really great and I am glad its one of the few mag sites that survived last year. Heavy emphasis on Music and Fashion. Definitely on the urban-side but they’ll surprise you from time to time. Check out the site and go buy a copy of the magazine too!

NYLON - I was introduced to this magazine by few friends of mine last year. I really like their angle. Its all fashion but with a slightly indie feel. It’s not like Vogue where it’d be all about haute couture and high fashion, but this mag/site is more about up&coming designers and labels that are fresh and purchasable for us regular folks.

Current – This is actually a TV network but they also have a good website. I am obsessed with this channel. A really great friend of mine told me about it awhile ago but it was not until recently that I finally took a minute to check it out. So finally last week I did and I have been watching hours of it every day/night….all week. There are soooo many different shows and news stories. From following Mos Def in Japan, to the Viewer Content (VC) short films where freelancers from all over the world create, produce/direct and submit their own newstories, to clips on social/foreign issues. A media outlet for the liberal-minded that a even a conservative could learn to love. If you are an aspiring writer, journalist, director/producer, and even actor/comedian, and social media genius, this is a site and network you should definitely check out!

___________________________________________________________________________

I hope you liked the designers/labels listed above. If you are a designer yourself, please email at editor.shademagazine@gmail.com and tell me about your work! Also lookout for a special DMV fashion piece next month!

Stay tuned folks, tons more to come!

PUBLICATIONS

WWD- I know I said Vogue is the fashion bible. But let me clarify, Vogue is great and always will be…but its like the old testament and WWD is the New Testament. This magazine seems to be carrying on torch…whether Vogue likes it or not. WWD is always thorough.

W – I love how big this magazine is. Sure its not the easiest to carry around but the photography (esp the covers!) are amazing. Great fashion too! Its definitely more European than most other mags we are use to, but thats what makes it so worthwhile.

Frank151- The complete opposite of W. These miniature magazine-books are always based off of a specific theme that is carried out in all aspects of the issue. Great friend of mine introduced me to this mag and its definitely grown on me over time. I was resistant to the size and thickness of the paper. But its effective and I do like that you can carry them everywhere. And they have interviews, anecdotes, fashion and music.

DOTCOMS

Bread & Butter-Website dedicated to urban fashion. Pretty thorough.

Vice Magazine-A friend of mine put me onto this site almost 3 years ago. I am grateful for that to this day. Raw and real articles. Great images. And I LOVE their dos & don’t section. Just hope ya never turn up in it though. yikes

Format Mag – Another friend of mine told me about this great site last year. Beautiful images, layout and graphics. Music, Fashion and Art online magazine.

This is THE LIST for this month. If you are a designer/label in the area(dc/md/va) or from elsewhere in the world, please contact me editor.shademagazine.com to be considered.  Every month you’ll get a new set of labels, designers, sites, publications and so forth added to THE LIST. Hope you enjoyed this set, please leave comments and tell me what you think!!

2010 Spring Paris Fashion Week

I have dreamt of going to fashion week…new york, paris and london…for-ever. However, as of now, I am still an under-the-radar…well under…renaissance woman. So until that glorious day comes where I will glide to my front row seats to any and every show my heart pleases to attend…I will write about it.

Overall general trend has been browns, whites, blacks, and sprinkle of color here and there. Light orange and blue was pretty common all across the board. Decent number of pant suits as well. Not the long skinny-leg kind, but your basic trousers right at ankle or mid-calf. Generally dresses were either super long or right above the knee.

So here’s my picks from 2010 Spring Paris Fashion Week:

mcq

Alexander McQueen- This man is fantastical. I wonder what his dreams are like. What he sends down the runway are just extraordinary works of art. This time I was hooked just on the shoes!

Junya Watanabe-I looove the 30′s style men’s shoes. No real dresses. Lots of pant-suits.Very masculine-chic. Beautiful tall tightly wound-wraps.

Giambattista Valli - If I was to go on a safari, I’d rock this. I mean that in a good way.I like the straw material. Perfectly-cut at mid-thigh to above the knee. Just how I like my skirts.

Jean Paul Gautier very colorful which definitely is not surprising since he always does his own thing. Corsetted tops making perfectly cinched waists.Heavy on the stockings and chunky bracelets and long cuts.

Balmain- Rocker-look. Had various looks not just dresses or just pant-suits like most of the other collections. A lot of individual pieces. Same color scheme though.Heavy on the details and hand-work.

Introducing: The List

THE LIST

linksalamode

I love fashion. Sounds like such a common statement. But it’s true. Fashion is definitely top 3 of worldly things that I truly love and actually get moved by. I actually get chills when I see an impeccably made dress or a stunning pair of heels. As a child I would alter my clothes, cutting up my shirts and bottoms, playing dress-up with my mother & sister’s clothes and shoes (until I couldn’t fit in them anymore!), and studying and obsessing over magazines. I was in there, back when the likes of Issac Mizarhi, Versace, Valentino, Carolina Herrera and Calvin Klein ruled the fashion world…and still do!  watch this

So I have always tried to keep up with different trends and realized…well…after a while it got to be really difficult to keep up. Trends, colors and materials are easy to keep up with, but these days names are coming in and out and the fashion industry has grown to mean more than just a dress and pair of pumps.

So I realized one thing I wish I had, was an extensive catalogue. A list that had names of labels that I had never heard of. And wished I had. So I decided I need to make that list. or at least start one. And add onto it as time went by. The comprehensive list I have been working on consists of labels, sites and magazines that I love and find fresh and I feel that you need to check out too.

Along the way, I studied different magazines, sites and shows and real-life people(I love seeing what people wear and how they create their looks!) and began jotting them down.

Over the course of next few months I will be building up to my extensive list. So to start off, here are the first batch:

Labels
