I guess it is no surprise from the numerous other posts I have on here that I love practically anything from Sweden and house music. So you know when I saw this video with Swedish House Mafia featuring Pharrell (of the super-producer group, the Neptunes and N.E.R.D.) I had to put it up to share with everyone. The annual Foto Week DC is held in November but the deadlines for submissions are starting as early as NOW! If you are a photographer of all levels of experience make sure you participate! Washington, DC [July 16, 2010] – FotoWeek DC, the premier photography festival in Washington, DC which celebrates the power of photography and its limitless possibilities, announces the launch of its third annual International Awards Competition.
The 2010 FotoWeek DC festival, to be held on November 6-13, 2010 across the District of Columbia, and throughout the metropolitan area, will kick off with an awards ceremony and exhibition on November 5 at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Corcoran College of Art + Design. The work to be unveiled at the invitation-only ceremony will recognize the winners of the FotoWeek DC competition, which has just begun.
“We expect this year to be the best one yet for our competition,” exclaimed FotoWeek DC Founder and President, Theo Adamstein. “Last year, we received thousands of amazing photos and multimedia submissions from 28 different countries. We hope to increase that significantly in 2010, as our reputation for quality grows around the world.”
Images are judged in 12 different categories, with cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place for each category. There is also the Spirit of Washington Award, which honors the photograph that best captures the essence of the Nation’s Capital and includes a top prize of $5,000.
The competition is open to all photographers, both amateurs and professionals, and there is an early bird discount for work submitted before July 31, 2010. The final deadline for submission before the entries go to the panel of world-class judges for review will be September 20, 2010.
New this year is a Mobile Phone category, in recognition of the fabulous imagery being shot now on smart phones. There is also a free FotoWeek DC Youth Contest for local children up to the age of 18, which is being sponsored by The Washington Post.
The winning work for both the International Awards Competition and the Youth Contest will be exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art throughout the festival in November.

Brooklyn-based musician, Brian Lindgren, originally from Minnesota, through his various travels collected and sampled various records and music and began to mix and sample spreading it to the masses under the name Mux Mool. I found this English band while surfing online and found this one upbeat pop song of theirs catchy. Plus I played it so many times trying to figure out what the hell they were saying in the hook. I came across Fang Island and specifically their song Daisy and couldn’t stop listening to it. The song was apparently used on MTV for The Buried Life…clearly I didn’t watch the show otherwise I would have wrote about it much much earlier. They released their self-titled album back in February and have received pretty decent reviews. Hell’s Kitchen A web-based magazine in french with edgy thematic covers, images and lengthy articles. They put them out on a more sporadic level. Besides covering the usual scene of fashion and arts, they also give you free mixtapes right on their website.
Honeyee This is a web-based magazine that covers Japanese fashion, music and art culture. The only downside? It’s all in Japanese. However, the site has a decent balance of visuals and you can still get put on to different designs and designers that have not yet garnered enough attention here in the states.
Tokyo Fashion I came across this site while doing some fashion research and was knew instantly it needed to be added to this month’s THE LIST. Japan is always sooo fashion forward and avantgarde with just about everything, even if it is not fashion-related. This is a good site to just see what the latest trends, influences, and fledgling designers.
Hope you learned about a new label and will go support these various designers, publications and sites.
