ARIIEL

ARIIEL

What started out as just a joke has turned into a growing entrepreneurial dream turned enterprise. The designer had a dream, the gift of drawing and the tenacity and will to manifest her ideas. She started off by designing high-end pieces and over time began to branch out and test her skills by actually making the jewelry herself. This resulted in the creation of a second line, in spring 2009, of custom-made jewelry pieces called ARIIEL. You may ask yourself, so what does “Ariiel” mean? It means, Light or Lion of God. The designer  says she selected this name, “merely for the projects’ inconceivable intention that may position it and others ahead, by becoming the guiding light!”

After a small sit-down with the designer, I asked her few questions about ARIIEL’s story, her inspiration and where her love for jewelry came from. Here’s what she said:

What sparked your initial desire to make art with metals and semi-precious gems?

Growing up, art was my favorite subject and still is to date; I remember cutting flowers and holding them in-between my fingers or against my earlobes and treating them like my jewelries or drawing, painting and creating things whether it was to create a piano out of cardboard box or sitting in a garden and painting a portrait of the scenery; I did it all!!  These were the hours that I retreated from reality and simultaneously these were the days that I began to cultivate and strengthen my GOD given talent and began to weave it with my favorite fashion accessory, Jewelry!!

How do your designs begin?

For ARIIEL: I shape them! And everything is based on my instinct.  It’s important that each piece has its own identity and not meet the status quo,  for the most part with respect to the classic signature-look of pearl necklaces.  Only in the case of pearl necklaces, I bend the rule because; it allows me to relate to some of my favorite actresses like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly who covered the front pages of countless magazines. Overall, my inspiration comes from a combination of things including nature, music and my surroundings together, gives birth to a vision and the jewelry evolves!

Which is more powerful in your work: materials effect imagination or vice versa?

I must say, the materials effect on my imagination have more power; just seeing it come to life itself brings joy to my heart and possesses power on its own not to mention, the jewelry’s color and degree of shimmer.

Who are the different types of women you envision wearing your pieces?

I would envision a woman, who is mysterious yet free spirited who embraces her own identity and style with a passion and confidence. To me, no one should be alike and everyone should have identity because each is special in her own ways!

What or who is your muse?

My imagination allows me to envision the piece before it’s made, and as such in my head is where the muse is located…because at times there have been items that I withdrew from a collection simply because, it didn’t stand out enough or whatever the reason might be in my mental picture.

What sets you apart?

ARIIEL’s identity/brand combined with my dream.

Lastly, is there something that feeds your creativity?

It would definitely be nature combined with my artistic visions which in turn  feed my creativity.

The following images below are just a few of the great pieces ARIIEL has to offer. At the bottom you will find the contact information you need should you want to inquire further!

The Producer Series: Max Martin

MAX MARTIN

Think of every single pop song you could have liked in the late 90′s, early-00′s..and even now really….well Max Martin is the man behind if not all, definitely most of them.

Yet another swede, I said this before in an older post, that I’m convinced nothing bad comes from Sweden. Max Martin grew up in the suburbs of Stockholm, joined a glam-style metal band, landed a deal with Cheiron Records and under the mentorship of famous producer/writer Dennis PoP, he went on to become a world-renowned professional producer/songwriter.  I would list all the songs he has worked on but it really would be literally almost like a 100 songs and counting. So check out the following video out and read off this list when you are done for his full credits list.

Sidenote, you should check out these great BBC video on pop music, with an interview by Max Martin himself:

PUBLICATIONS, SITES & PLACES

Wonderland Magazine- An edgy indie magazine and site created by a Londoner by name of Huw Gwyther. Mag covers fashion and film. Some great articles and images. Definitely a more edgier vibe than you’d find in say Vogue or Nylon. So take a look at their site, read some articles and let me know what you think!

Artschoolvets- Cool arts and culture website…only problem is its all in German. And they don’t have an english option though they really should. Features some really cool artists and I really got into it simply on the images and gives you insight into what young European readers and art enthusiasts may be into these days. Check it out!

DEKKA -Local fashion/art collective located right on U st in DC. A lot of great designers and artists showcase their work in that place and that is definitely one spot I’d recommend anyone to go to for some great purchases and to find out about some great indie designers/artists.

I hope you liked this segment of THE LIST. More to come next time around. Leave a comment and let me know what you think!

Producer Series: The Bama Boyz

THE BAMA BOYZ

Continuing on with the new producer series I started, here is a Grammy-nominiated trio of guys who are steadily building their resume and working with diverse artists across various genres. Along with working with on major artists, movie soundtracks and big-name brand campaigns, they have worked on their own EP, Meet the Bamaz, which you can check out and read up more about them here.

Think there are others out there who need to be covered? Let me know!

Ladyhawke

First came across this artist off of Lastfm….which I’ve started using because imeem sucks at life and has decided to link up with myspace. And I put La Roux in and it led me to discover so many deliciously exciting artists. One of which was Ladyhawke. The name alone was intriguing but then I listened to her music and decided she was one artist I’d keep up on from now on. So here is few videos of hers you should check so you see what I am talking about and let me know what you think!

Soulshock & Karlin

PRODUCER SERIES?

After having an argument with a friend of mine about who is/are the top producer(s) out right now….I decided dammit, it’d couldn’t just be a toss between Neptunes and Kanye.Or for that matter any of the other producer/artists we know and love such as JD, Timbaland, Swizz or Dr.Dre. There has to be others who really stay true to just producing and make a million number one songs and dumb amounts of money, all the while remaining under the radar…similar to that of Quincy Jones.

So with all that being said, I think I may start a producer series. Since these days, it appears they are starting to intrigue me more so than the actual artists themselves. Here is another duo, Danish, heavy on the r&b side but have pretty solid resume, by the name of Soulshock & Karlin. They have worked with everyone from Whitney Houston, Monica to Jojo, Seal and K’naan. Read up on them some more here.

Here are some of the songs these guys have worked on in the past. I think they are worth keeping tabs on and really just acknowledging the great work they have done in the best and will likely continue to do:

***sidestory on the last video. That album was the first cassette tape I ever owned. I playyyyyyed the heck out of it too!

I shared a lot of their older stuff, but new projects are definitely in the works for this duo. I’ll post them over time.

Freemasons

FREEMASONS

Came across this duo when I was listening to remixes of different songs, most recently it was I Decided by Solange Knowles (who by the way had a really great album).I thought to myself, how in the world was it I had never heard of these guys or at least not known of them prior…well turns out I had…unknowingly. These two English producers came together. Formed a dance band. Decided to also on the side remix just about every top pop artist’s album you could think of…i.e. Beyonce, Kylie Minogue, Tina Turner, Faith Evans and more. They have released few of their own albums in the past and word is they have a new one slated to be released this year. Unsurprisingly, they have a stronger following overseas but I think overtime they will win over more American listeners.

Just to give you an idea of their sound and previous work they have done, check out these videos (few of them you are probably familiar with already):

remember this??

Okay that should be good for now. When their new stuff surfaces, I’ll make sure to share.
